I am a freelance writer and market organiser based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Although I have a BA degree and have worked as a writer, copywriter and journalist since I left university, markets have always played an ongoing role in my life.
In 1997 I started a lifestyle market called the Holistic Lifestyle Fair in the suburb of Observatory, Cape Town with my then partner and my mother. The Fair is still in operation, and has formed the foundation to various other markets and events that I have been involved in organising over the years.
I have always loved visiting markets – even as a child, going to markets with my mom was a favourite weekend leisure activity.
To make pocket money in high school I also used to sell my own crafts and artwork at a couple of markets around Durban – an experience that taught me many valuable entrepreneurial (and social) skills!
Today I work as a freelancer so as to be able to spend as much time as possible with my delightful young daughter, Safiya.
This guide to markets around South Africa has been an idea of mine for many years, and now I’m pleased to be able to bring it to life in the form of the samarketmaven Blog.
