A comprehensive compendium of markets!

Sweet stall - St Joseph's Boqueria, Barcelona

Welcome, market fundi, to this comprehensive compendium of marketplaces in South Africa… and wherever else in the world I can collect information from.

According to www.dictionary.com, a market is defined as follows:

Market – noun

1.

an open place or a covered building where buyers and sellers convene for the sale of goods; a marketplace: a farmers’ market.

2.

a store for the sale of food: a meat market.

3.

a meeting of people for selling and buying.”

And www.wikipedia.org describes a marketplace thus:

“A marketplace is a location where goods and services are exchanged. The traditional market square is a city square where traders set up stalls and buyers browse the merchandise. This kind of market is very old, and countless such markets are still in operation around the whole world.”

In this Blog the word ‘markets’ includes:

“any market, expo, exhibition or festival anywhere in South Africa (or the world) where traders set up stalls to sell and promote their wares and services to the public.”

It will list the most comprehensive information possible about any and all varieties of markets/marketplaces that I can find from around SA, and internationally, and will also feature reviews of markets that you have visited .

I hope you’ll find samarketmaven helpful in locating markets of interest to you, and that you’ll contribute by sending us info about markets not yet listed, as well as your comments and reviews of the markets featured here.

Happy market-going!
